Scholarship provides vital student support

Navigating the trials of university life just became a little easier for one deserving first year student from Byabarra in the Hastings.

Felicity Wilson was awarded the Lewis Land Group Continuing Education Scholarship at the Hasting Education Fund’s annual presentation evening.

The awards are aimed at assisting the next generation of eligible high school graduates and a selection of first year university students with a financial boost to assist with their tertiary education expenses.

Felicity is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) combined with a Bachelor of Criminology at the University of Newcastle.

“I am incredibly honoured and grateful to have been granted one of the continuing scholarships sponsored by the Lewis Land Group… The scholarship will help me to be able to afford some of the additional costs of tertiary education. This is anything from textbooks to printing costs, accommodation, and other study related expenses,” Felicity explained.

Lewis Land Group Chief Financial Officer Chris Allenby presented Felicity’s scholarship, which will provide $5,000 a year for the duration of her degrees, and said she had shown incredible commitment to her studies and university life.

“We are very proud of our ongoing association with the Hastings Education Fund and supporting tertiary students in our local community. We are delighted to present this year’s scholarship to Felicity who we have found to be an exceptional ambassador for the next generation of leaders,” Mr Allenby said.

Felicity is among three university students currently receiving the LLG Continuing Education Scholarship.

The scholarships are coordinated by the Hastings Education Fund which has been helping students achieve their study dreams and career goals for the past 13 years.

“It has been a source of stability while moving into a new and different environment, not only for its financial help but also for the community HEF has created,” stated Felicity, who has her sights set on becoming a barrister. “Knowing there are many people who have your back and are supporting you is incredibly comforting.”

Felicity had this advice for the next crop of first year students.

“The move into tertiary education is meant to be fun and exciting. Try not to overwhelm yourself in the first few months. It will be an adjustment, but you will find it won’t take long to settle in. Start good habits from the beginning of your degree, and don’t forget to incorporate good lifestyle choices.”
