More Hastings’ wildlife affected by the bush fires will receive a new home and food thanks to the efforts of the all-species Port Macquarie wildlife group FAWNA.
On Australia Day eve, the Sovereign Place Town Centre is throwing a fun-raiser to assist FAWNA’s Food4Wildlife and Nest Box Appeal.
The community is invited to come along to the town centre on Saturday 25 January between 10am and 2pm to show its support.
Proceeds will help the Hastings’ species affected by the fires and loss of habitat.
A range of gold coin family-friendly activities have been organised.
The event program includes:
The recent fires have caused significant loss of wildlife and native food resources.
In November, FAWNA (NSW) Inc., the volunteer group licensed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, launched its Food4Wildlife and Nest Box Appeal.
There are now 30 FAWNA food collection stations throughout the Mid Coast, Port Macquarie and Kempsey shires where the community can collect Macropod pellets and wild bird seed for kangaroos, wallabies, possums, birds and other native animals.
The appeal is also funding hundreds of nest boxes for species such as the brushtail possum, microbat, gliders and birds. FAWNA has been consulting with ecologists to ensure the boxes are placed where wildlife homes are most needed in the Hastings for hollow-dependent species.
“It will be terrific to have a boost for our nest box project which is aiming to provide substitute homes for wildlife who lost theirs in the fires,” said FAWNA President Meredith Ryan about the fun-raiser.
“We’re in this for the long haul while we recover from the significant changes to our forests and wildlife habitat.”
Sovereign Place Town Centre businesses including the Hastings Co-op IGA, Juice Box, Brooklyn’s Burger Bar, The Hill Café and Triple Two are dedicated to doing their bit to assist this local initiative in the wake of the fires, throwing their support behind the activities and donating raffle and competition prizes.
Members of the Sovereign Hills community have also stepped forward offering prizes and their support.
