The Sovereign Place Town Centre green will become the site of a world record breaking attempt with a difference in June.
The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West is attempting to ‘sock it’ to Germany by creating the longest washing line of socks off Chancellors Drive on 4 and 5 June, while raising $150,000 for four amazing local charities.
Sovereign Place kicked things off with a $15,000 pledge at the challenge launch where a successful test run was held.
“All the charities have suffered hard through COVID-19 with restrictions on their fundraising,” shared Rotarian Trevor Gilson, the mastermind behind the event.
Beneficiaries include Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse, Soldier On, YP Space and the Hastings Education Fund.
“Sovereign Place is proud to be the major sponsor and has committed to doubling our $15,000 donation if Rotary reaches its community fundraising target,” said Lewis Land Group Head of Development Michael Long.
Rotary’s objective is to peg more than 100,000 socks on a custom-built 10,000m washing line. The current world record of 6,066m is held by CAJ Halverde, Germany.
Stainless steel peg manufacturer Activated Eco has kindly loaned 150,000 pegs to the cause. The only missing element now – your socks!
“The beauty of it is that it’s a community event really, there’s no exception; everyone can have a go at being involved in this one way or another,” added Trevor.
You can donate your unwanted socks via donation bins at the Hastings Co-op’s four IGA stores, including Sovereign Place IGA, as well as local opportunity shops.
“It’s trying to prove that Rotary can do the impossible, if we all pull together, put our skills together and our hearts together, we can do anything, achieve anything,” enthused Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West President Heather Mayne.
Following the challenge, the socks will be donated to ensure they don’t end up in landfill.
Textiles Recyclers Australia will recycle all single socks and socks with holes. Paired socks in good condition will either be donated to charities or sent to Fiji via the Nambucca Valley Rotary Club.
