Christmas will be a little brighter for 160 Hastings families this year thanks to the incredible work of the Salvation Army Port Macquarie branch.

“A lot of single parents, the unemployed, those who have been widowed and grandparents with grandkids will receive donated items this Christmas,” explained Major Kevin Unicomb.

Sovereign Hills was delighted to bolster the Salvos’ Christmas stocks by donating gifts and gift cards, to ensure older children and caregivers also don’t miss out this festive season.

“This will help tremendously, particularly with the teenagers and adults; to be able to buy what they like is really useful.”

The demand for food hampers and gifts reached a new record this year, according to Major Unicomb, despite Port Macquarie being “a fairly affluent” town.

“Fuel, rental costs and general expenses are higher in Port Macquarie compared to other regional centres and there are some families who really struggle.

“Christmas plans can also be derailed by illness and injury.”

Lewis Land Group Chief Executive Officer Chris Calvert said it was very important for Sovereign Hills to give back to the local community.

“We’re very cognizant some people in the Port Macquarie community are finding it tough and being able to contribute to this group means a lot to us,” Mr Calvert said.

“Hopefully we can help brighten the Christmas of those less fortunate.”

The Salvation Army welcomes donations and gifts from a variety of businesses, community groups and individuals in the lead up to Christmas.

“It’s great to have Sovereign Hills come on board and help us; it’s wonderful,” added Major Unicomb.

“It’s really a joy to be able to help people and to know that you’re making a difference.”
